CHAPTER 9: TWO-WORD VERBS (PHRASAL VERBS)

A TWO-WORD VERB CONSIST OF A MAIN VERB PLUS A PARTICLE. IN MOST CASES, THE ADDITION OF THE PARTICLE CHANGES THE MEANING OF THE VERB.
EX: I´m goint to take the bus
She´s going to take back her books.
We´re going to take down the Christmas tree.


SEPARABLE TWO-WORD VERBS


° Some two-word verbs are separable. The noun object can follow the two-
word verb or the two-word verb can be separated by a noun object.
EX: He´s going to throw out his old newspaper
He´s going to throw his old newspaper out


° When the noun object of a two-word verb is replaced by a pronoun, the
pronoun must be placed between the two parts of the verb.
EX: She´s going to fill out her college application forms.
She´s going to fill them out.


I´m going to hook up my new computer.
I´m going to hook it up.

INSEPARABLE TWO-WORD VERBS


° Some two-word verbs are inseparable. The noun or pronoun object must
always follow the two-word verb.
EX: I heard from Aunt Betty last week.
I heard from her las week.
